All three variations of stainless steel ribbons are quickly and easily welded to the braided tubing using the CD100SPM and WH1125A in the following configuration:
The upper electrode is 1/8″ copper with a tip that is tapered down to 1/16″. The lower electrode is 1/8″ copper that is bent at 900 angle. The Tip of the lower electrode is 1/16″ diameter and 3/8″ long. The spring force on the WH1125A is set to 5lbs.
The plastic core is pushed back to allow for insertion of the lower electrode tip and the ribbon is held above braided tube. The operator presses the foot pedal to lower the electrode and a second foot pedal is used to trigger the weld. Alternatively the weld head can trigger the weld as the electrode reaches the correct position. The CD100SPM is set to maximum pulse width at an energy setting of 7ws to attach the ribbons. We placed three welds to ensure good contact with as many strands of the braid as possible.
Prior to attaching the ribbon, the same set-up can be used to weld the end of the braided tube to keep the strands from fraying by placing several welds around the tubing at 5ws energy. The remaining fray can be cut off for a smoother edge if desired.
The CD100SPM and WH1125A are an ideal combination for welding these applications. Although we were able to achieve good results using the settings outlined, it is recommended you experiment further with your product to fine tune the settings and find the perfect electrode geometry and energy setting for the best strength and minimal deformation. Energy levels can be increased for more strength if desired. In a production setting, weld efficiency and speed can be increased by using a fixture to hold the components in place during the weld.
