  • My version of the rolling log trap that forces rodents to shift their center of gravity to get the bait.

Rolling log rat trap 2.0 parts
At my local Lowe’s as of 4/10/17:

    227199 32-gal BH ROUND TRASH CAN $14.98
    23814 3/4-IN INX5-FT CVPC PIPE. $3.44
(You can get regular pvc pipe cheaper, I just didn’t want to buy a huge piece)
    23773 3/4-IN CAP CPVC 94898/47. $0.68 (x2)
    17199 3/8-2 #3 STEEL REBAR PIN $1.55

The only tools I used were a hacksaw for the pvc and a 1/2″ drill bit for all the holes for the rebar.

You could certainly use a smaller container, once the rat falls in water, it doesn’t really matter how high it could normally jump. I just had another reason why I needed another trash can. But it does fit the rebar perfectly. And of course you’ll need some ramps.

I’ve got a leaking angle stop here. So I turned off the water outside and then removed the angle stop. Usually, you use a second pair of channel locks here. And let’s see. OK.

This here is about the best kind of angle stop that you can get. It’s a quarter turn only angle stop. What it has inside is a ball valve. We’re going discard this piece, because a lot of the supply lines these days have a compression fitting that compresses against here.

The ball valve– you can see this is open. It’s a quarter turn to open and a quarter turn to close. And the ball valve just comes up and over to shut off the water supply. And this is a lot less likely to wear out. It also doesn’t have a second nut on the front, which is also sometimes a trouble spot which also needs to be repaired sometimes.

So this has a little bit less tendency to wear out. Other angle stops are usually a compression angle stop that uses a dishwasher. That, when it’s turned off, seats against and squeezes against the inner portion of the angle stop to turn the water off. And that obviously wears out as they get squeezed and unsqueezed, squeezed and unsqueezed. And this just turns open or turns closed– so a little bit better.

And as I show in the video, we’re going to reuse the existing ferrule and nut. So we don’t need this portion. And what we need to do is wrap Teflon tape two or three turns around, going with the threads. That way, as we tighten it up and install it, the turning of the nut onto the threads doesn’t remove the Teflon tape. We also sort of want to skip the first one or two threads to better avoid cross threading.

So here we go. We are all ready for the install now. I’m able to reuse the existing nut here in my new angle stop. I wrapped Teflon tape around the end. Thread it in at first. Make sure that we don’t get the deal cross threaded here. And we can turn it in here and then tighten it here. There we go. Make sure our line’s off. And I’ve got a new supply line here, which we’re actually going to leave disconnected, because this line was getting replaced. Let’s hook this up for them so it’s ready to go when they change out the toilet. Run downstairs and turn the water back on, and we’re good to go.
