This film tells part of the story of the last few weeks of John Close’s life with MND. Shortly after Easter 2003, we started to film him for a BBC Video Nation project. The film shows some of John’s daily activities, including being fed via his PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) feeding tube as well as his enjoyment of the smell of fish and chips! It also shows part of the routine John went through every morning to try to alleviate his terrible constipation.
The wake John gave for some of his oldest friends, at a pub on Willen Lake in Milton Keynes, appears before the film follows John as he travels to Dignitas in Switzerland. He chose an assisted death when he was just a few weeks away from dying of MND. He died, with great peace and dignity, with Dignitas’ help on 26th May 2003. His death is not shown in this film. http://onefivenine.info/johnclose.htm
Following the death of her brother, John Close, in 2003 at Dignitas in Switzerland Lesley has worked tirelessly for a change in the law to allow an assisted death for terminally ill, mentally competent adults who have expressed a wish to die. She has appeared many times on television and radio programmes about assisted dying as well as taking part in live debates.
In February 2014, her book Assisted Dying: Who Makes the Final Decision? co-authored with Jo Cartwright of campaigning organisation, Dignity in Dying, was published by Peter Owen. This important new book explores the historical, legal, medical and religious aspects of assisted dying and includes seven case studies of those who have suffered at the end of their lives due to the present law.

Steps I took to install a lawn pop-up drain at my home. Once installed, the drain will take rain water from the down spout on the gutter system and water our lawn when it rains.
