*** Update of Ultimate Outdoor Shower #2 : https://youtu.be/HukZS_cxsh8
Sure an outdoor shower is a great accent for a pool area. But what if you finish mowing the grass….and just want to clean off and sip on a cold beer? Well, this is the perfect plan for you to follow. Even if you don’t have a pool!! And it’s simple. Mostly 2 X 6 foundation and completely free standing with no concrete blocks or messy holes to dig.
An outdoor shower is one of those things that you might scratch your head over the idea at first and say “really?!” But when you see one in use, the ideas and offering of tranquility come to mind….and then you’re like….mmmmm….yeah….I want one of those in my yard! My desire comes from the beach. Every visit to the beach, brings some form of outdoor shower…and for whatever reason….I had to build one for myself!! So off to Home Depot and Lowes I went.
After some research, I found that there are essentially two kinds of showers. Stand-alone models like the one I built. And wall mount structures, which are usually permanent in nature. Stand-alones attach to flexible hosing and are mobile. Wall-mounts are stationary. Therefore, deciding whether your shower will be a portable or permanent installation is the first step in deciding what type of shower will work for you.
Of course, you can go direct into the garden hose for your water…but for a small amount of money and a little extra effort, you can enjoy the luxury of the perfect hot and cold mix of water any time you want it.
Single-hose showers are pretty much for the warmest of climates and use residual warm water from the hose for initial start up. For fall and winter use in most climates, you would definitely want to explore solar heating, on demand heating, or route I went, which is a direct connect from the house. I split the hot and cold water from the underside of my kitchen sink and went directly out the wall to the stand alone shower. Most economical…and for me…most reliable.
Oddly enough, I sketched no plans and followed no directions for this shower….and built it as I went. Being a video and audio designer by trade, carpentry is not my trade, but my goal was functionality. And this shower is indeed functional. I hope my pictures and narration might spark your interest or desire to enter into the wonderful world of outdoor showering. It really is a gift I gave to myself…and plan to enjoy for years to come! Peace to you and your world.
